Description

The walking route

” We’ll take the train in Portbou and cross the border in Cerbere, both stations that conserve their atmosphere and speak of bygone days of movement and prosperity. Once in Banyuls we’ll set off on the trail that will take us to Portbou, crossing the border on the route taken by Walter Benjamin. We’ll experience his hopes and fears before he met his tragic fate and listen to short readings from his work against a backdrop of stunning views of the Albera hills and the Mediterranean sea”

Walter Benjamin’s stay in the town of Portbou, at the northern end of the Costa Brava and a border crossing between Catalonia and France, lasted little more than 12 hours . Even so, his memory lingers on.

This German Jewish thinker, born in Berlin in 1892, crossed the Franco-Spanish border on 26th September 1940, fleeing from Nazism and aiming to reach Portugal and sail for America, but he died in this small town on the Catalan coast. His death was silenced by the Francoist dictatorship for decades but, since the re-establishment of democracy, dignity has been returned to his memory.
